I intended to talk about something about
debate, as Ms Lim suggested. But at the
moment I was going to write something down, I changed my mind, because I
realised that I’m not good at it. I’m
not qualified to say something on debate.
The advice I shared in the class was just searched from the
Internet. It sounds reasonable and
useful when first heard; for me, however, it isn’t ‘useful’ since I don’t know
how to ‘use’ it.
This reminded me of a Chinese saying: it
is far more difficult to embroider than to watch someone do. It means when you watch some doing something,
you think it’s easy; however, when you do it by your own, you may find it is
very hard. The saying and the thing I
mentioned in first paragraph look different, right? But essentially, they are the same. Sometimes, you only know some skills
theoretically, but you actually don’t know how to apply them; you only know how
it comes out, but you actually don’t know how to make it come out.
This is a common problem that our
Chinese students are facing (Otherwise the saying wouldn’t come from China ;) Of course, I have to admit this fact: although
I’m a typical representative of this kind of students, here allows many
exceptions. ). After coming here, I
realised this problem even more strongly.
So how to solve it? I have to ask
myself this question. It is not easy to
give a simple answer for anyone, I think, especially for one like me that was
stuck in this problem. Maybe I only need
to train myself more and try to change myself and use different ways of
thinking. Do you have any solution?
Ps: maybe that I can’t find the answer is
because I’m not good at debate. Many
people think that good debaters are also good at solving problems. If it is true, I think I’m in a vicious
circle!
i don't think so. practice makes perfect. there are people who are good at debating because they are interested and practice a lot. moreover, no one can be good at everything. we can do our best, and then, most importantly, accept what we really are and always be happy.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your encouragement! I am not discouraged, I just...intended to give some guess.
DeleteThank you~
I have seen your effort to prepare the debate.I think sometimes you take our assignments too serious, such as oral reports. It's true that we search for information from Internet as the materail, but I'm sure we can learn something from it.Remember that the intention of this work is to improve our speaking skills. This is the most important, right? So no need to think too much about the meaning of these assignments.haha
ReplyDeleteYeah, you are right. But now the problem is that I think my oral English is really poor...
DeleteAny way, thanks for your care on me~
I agree with what Shenghao said. You thought too highly of it, so it may give you pressure. I have said that I like your voice of speaking English, so there is no need to ask yourself to be pefect. While doing something, just enjoy it. I used to think debate is so difficult for me, but I enjoyed watching debate, their logical thought. However, when I did it myself especially in English, I felt it really fun. Don't think too much. Just experience it!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your praise as well as encouragement!
DeleteI am feeling a little regretful now. How could I see these comments so late! Or I can feel much better much earlier!
just like maths. after you have learned a formula, you need some exercise to consolidate it. so when you get the information, you need more debate to practise. maybe you are too strict with yourselves.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I am. But most of the time I dont realise it myself!
DeleteThank you for comments, and the good analogy~
I admit that debate is hard for me, too. And it is rather hard to do it in English. But I believe that practice makes perfect. We just need more practice and preparation then it will be better.
ReplyDeleteThank you~ I will try. Let's fight together!
